Local
Fuuls, Blood Mouth
There’s a lot we could say about “Blood Mouth.” We could say that it’s filled with righteous anger that we weren’t expecting, we could say that it feels like a pot boiling over, or we could say that it makes 4 minutes feel like nothing. But you should just listen to it.
Emzee & Silas, Road
Going through a breakup? Got some heartbroken wounds that unexpectedly opened back up? This is exactly the track for you. It’s dreamy and vulnerable, violin catching us before stirring lyrics and vocals set us back down.
New Albums
Beyoncé, Black is King
There is not a single person who could do what Beyoncé does with every visual album she drops. Separately, the visuals, vocals, and storytelling could win awards. And all together? “Black is King” is a masterpiece.
Thanya Iyer, KIND
This record unexpectedly caught our attention, and it still has it. It’s experimental without feeling like it’s trying to put something over our head. Thanya Iyer’s voice has a smooth, lush quality about it that grabs our attention before flooding our senses with sounds that could have come from nature.
Alanis Morissette, Some Pretty Forks in the Road
Isn’t it ironic that Alanis Morissette released this buzzkill of an album in the middle of chaos? We know, that was bad, but it had to be done. And to clarify, we don’t say “buzzkill” in a bad way. Actually, this sounds like Alanis’s most hopeful album yet.
LAKE, Roundelay
We’ve had “Resolution” on our summer playlist since this album dropped, but now is the time to give LAKE the love they deserve. This album is almost-jazzy, pretty lyrical, and very very summery.
Morgan Harper-Jones, Breathe EP
We LOVE music from “eat your heart in the marketplace” girls. The girls who will write slam poetry about you and read it in class, the girls who were cooler than you in the first place, and still are? Layered harmonies that shimmer and simple instrumentations fill this EP.
Madeline Kenney, Sucker's Lunch
“Sucker’s Lunch” is breezy, brimming with emotive lyrics that float around backing that never strays too far away from laid back coffee shops. The vibes, as they say, are immaculate.
New Singles
Washed Out, Time To Walk Away
Y’all, do you remember those kids in high school who thought they were so cool for listening to Washed Out? Yea, well we were those kids, and we still feel cool about it. Except instead of depressing nostalgia, we get “Time To Walk Away” which is upbeat while not sounding perky.
lovelytheband, buzz cut
How could we not love this track with lyrics like “Red flags turn to pixie dust”? Almost toxic love, but turn it into a single that never stops jamming. The energy in this one is high, and between the catchy chorus and the guitars and drums that never stops, it doesn’t come down.
Corey Flood, Heaven Or
This track reminds us of late 90s/early 2000s grungy summer in all the best ways. The instrumentation glides along, pushing the track over Corey Flood’s voice without overpowering.
Milo Gore, Noise Gone Dancing
This track brought a level of grunge and angst we weren’t expecting, but we are 100% not mad about it. Milo Gore’s voice has a level of honest sharpness that matches up with consistent drums and unexpected guitars.
