Local Round Up
With the new year comes new music. Here’s what you need to know about Missoula music this month.
A Flowering of Scientific Works
Puppylove is releasing his debut album this January. Inspiration pulled from everyday life and past experience, the man behind Puppylove, Mason Hutchinson, weaves meaning into the world through his music. Thin guitar and wispy vocals reminiscent of Elliott Smith or Alex G. accompany Hutchinson’s lyrics. Marked by poetic instrumentation and touching snapshots of Hutchinson’s life, A Flowering of Scientific Work is one to add to your library.
Exit Music For Exit WOunds
A frontrunner in the Missoula music scene, Ash Nataanii leaves her audience in awe. Longtime member of FUULS, Nataanii’s solo career shines. From maternal morning, to the impact of spiritualism and faith on her life, she holds nothing back from her listeners. Singing with captivating emotion and incredible variety, it’s impossible not to get caught in the warm wake of her music. Nataanii’s work is accompanied by complex riffs on electric guitar and passionate percussion. Exit Music for Exit Wounds is coming out on February 5th, so mark your calendar!
HDYK
After four years of creation in the music scene, Arrowleaf is coming out with their debut album. Frontlined by lead singer, Sarah Marker, the quintessential quintet of Missoula music writes on grief, joy and isolation. Marker, treating her music as her lens through which she experiences the world, is a creative genius. Her writing is a mirror of introspection, deeply personal and relatable at the same time. One can find a sense of recognition in her lyrics, taking the listener home. Creative instrumentation accompanies the album, capturing the listener in intricate rhythms. Arrowleaf will have a virtual show with the ZACC on the 30th of January. Their album is expected to come out in March, but their new single, HDYK, is out on the 29th.
Through Seasons of Sorrow
Through Seasons of Sorrow is one to watch for. Maria Zepeda’s songwriting is profound and personal. Speaking on themes such as depression and finding purpose in life. Natural sounds and clear brass highlight the fragile tones of Zepeda’s voice. Her listeners are frozen between both fragile and harsh elements, highlighting the duality of Zepeda’s music. The accumulation of seven years of work, Zepeda is to release her debut album January 31st.
