Who can get on the air at KBGA?

What do I have to do to get a radio show?
Can I work for KBGA?
How can I make a request?  Call 406.243.6226

"I am glad the station continues to run... As co-founder and original Program Director and Chief Engineer, it was a pleasure building the station from a dream to a reality and I am happy to see that KBGA lives on." -Todd Graetz, the G in KBGA.

How can I found out what song I heard on the radio that one time?
Go to spinitron.com and click on KBGA. You can search every day going back to 2006 and see everything our DJs have played. If you know the daye and a rough time frame of when you heard a song, you can find it on Spinitron. There's also a live feed of spinitron in the Now Playing section of our website. See what's on right now!

How can I make a request?
Our request line is  406-243-6226.
Asking the DJ to play you a song doesn't guarantee it'll happen, but we'll do our best!

Who can get on the air at KBGA?
Motivated people! We are licensed to the University of Montana as a non-commercial, educational radio station, which means our focus is on educating interested Missoula residents about broadcasting. You do not have to be a UM student to get on the air at KBGA; you simply have to have an honest desire to learn about broadcasting and have a passion for music.

What (specifically) do I have to do to get a radio show?
1. Attend one of our DJ trainings. We usually hold these twice a semester. The next one is in the works for summer 2011. These are typically over a weekend and run noon-4 on Saturday and noon-2 on Sunday. During the training, you learn about FCC and station policies, station history and our mission statement. There is a brief test at the end.
2. After passing the test, you sign up for 3 buddy sessions with veteran DJs. By the end of these sessions, you will be able to operate our studio equipment and can work towards developing your own program idea.
3. Once buddy sessions are completed, you can start filling in shifts from our posting board. With 74 program slots currently, someone needs help filling their shift weekly. The next step towards getting your show is to fill three shifts from the posting board. After this, you've had almost 20 hours on the air!
4. We require new DJs to log 10 volunteer hours for the station before they can be awarded a full time shift. This can be alphabetizing CDs, working our event tables, etc.
5. The final step is the show proposal form. This document can be filled out and turned in to our Program Director at any time, but you must complete the above requirements before your proposal will be considered for a permanent shift.

How can I work for KBGA?
First, you must be a student enrolled 6 credits or more at the University of Montana. While anyone in the Missoula listening area can become a DJ, the staff positions are reserved for students of the University of Montana. The staff changes over every year in April, thus introducing a new round of student staff eager to run the radio station. More information, including applications forms and dates, can be found by calling our office line at 243-6758.

What is KBGA's broadcast range?
We broadcast at 1000 watts from Waterworks hill on the Northside of Missoula. This results in a broadcast range servicing Missoula and the surrounding area.  We are also streaming online, taking us around the globe.

Is KBGA ever off the air?

Nope.
We have live DJs in the studio 20 hours out of every day of the year, even through summer and winter break. Overnight from 2-6am, our robot computer usually takes over and plays random selections from the library. These late night shifts are highly encouraged for new DJs!

What's RadioThon?
Every February, we get on the air for seven days and ask our listeners to send in their support for college radio.
The phone number is always 243-KBGA.

What's EndofThon?
The End of Radiothon. It's our big 'ol party to celebrate a successful fundraiser!

Does KBGA have other music events throughout the year?
Of course! We have three BIG events every year. Birthday Bash in September, EndofThon in February, and Fool's Night Out in April.
All three of these are at the Badlander/Palace complex and usually draw out over 900 people per event! In addition to the big three, we have events sporadically during the rest of the year. Artists KBGA has booked include: Kurt Vile, Vampire Weekend (twice), Oneida, Akron Family, Class Actress, Small Black, Blank Dogs, Rafter, Rainbow Arabia, Mt St Helens Vietnam Band (twice), Pack AD, Fag Cop, Titus Andronicus, The Hood Internet, Visqueen, Yacht, Talkdemonic, Monotonix and many more!

How/when did KBGA start?
Way back in '96, Greg Bourriague Todd Graetz, and Craig Altmaier got KBGA on the air.
Originally known as Revolution Radio, KBGA quickly became a collective of music nuts and charismatic Missoulians. Over the last 14 years, KBGA has become a beloved facet of day to day life in Missoula.
